Dominican University of California was founded in 1890 by the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael. 

In 1917 Dominican College became the first Catholic college in California to grant the bachelor’s degree to women. 

Coed since 1971, Dominican College became Dominican University of California in 2000. 


The campus is a few miles north of San Francisco across the Golden Gate Bridge in Marin County.

Fanjeaux Hall is a resident dorm, named after the hilltop town in southern France where Dominic lived from 1206-1215 and founded the first convent of Dominican Sisters

Guzman Hall

Dominic de Guzmán


Dominic is the patron saint of astronomers and Guzman Hall once had a a telescope from the Mt. Wilson Observatory installed on the roof

Caleruega Dining Hall


Dominic was born on 

August 8, 1170 in 

Caleruega, a village in northern Spain.

He was named after the 11th century Benedictine Santo Domingo de Silos,

 who’s abbey is a few miles from Caleruega
